We are thrilled to announce that Conti Federal has been awarded two Best Regional Project awards by Engineering News-Record (ENR) magazine. These awards recognize the dedication, innovation, and teamwork of the teams that delivered outstanding projects over the past year. We are proud to see our efforts acknowledged on such a prominent platform, reflecting our commitment to excellence in design and construction.
The ENR Regional Best Projects Awards are a series of events that celebrate and honor the finest projects across the United States. These awards are highly competitive, with independent juries of industry leaders in design and construction from each of ENR’s 10 regional editions evaluating submissions. The projects are judged based on five criteria: safety, innovation, teamwork, quality, and the ability to overcome challenges.
Our Jersey City Medical Center flood mitigation project received the Best Project award in the Water/Environment category for the New York region.
This project is particularly significant due to the challenges posed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012, which devastated infrastructure across New York and New Jersey, exposing critical structures to future disaster risks.
Jersey City Medical Center, a crucial healthcare facility on a 15-acre campus overlooking New York Harbor, faced substantial vulnerabilities in the wake of Sandy. The storm’s impact highlighted the need for robust disaster preparedness to ensure the medical center could continue to provide essential services to the community in times of crisis.
In response, a transformative project was launched to enhance flood protection at the medical center through a micro-resiliency strategy. With $36 million in funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the project focused on fortifying the hospital’s infrastructure against future disasters. This comprehensive flood protection initiative not only safeguards the medical center’s operations but also ensures the safety and well-being of the surrounding community during severe weather events.
The second recognition was awarded to the Fort Liberty Barracks Renovation project, which received an Award of Merit in the Government/Public Building category for the Southeast region. Conti Federal completed this ambitious renovation project at Fort Liberty in an impressive 11 months, enabling 1,200 displaced soldiers to return to the barracks.
Fort Liberty is one of the largest military installations in the world by population and the largest U.S. Army base by population. When a mold infestation was discovered in three barracks on base, the base turned to a Rapid Disaster Infrastructure (RDI) contract from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Omaha District. Conti Federal was awarded a $69.4 million contract to restore the barracks on an expedited schedule.
A project of this magnitude would typically require 30 months to complete; however, Conti Federal accomplished the task in just 11 months. The restoration project involved demolishing the barracks down to the load-bearing structures and executing a complete renovation of the interiors, including all infrastructure and finishes. The newly renovated facility now offers modern and comfortable accommodations for the soldiers, ensuring a safe and healthy living environment.
We are incredibly proud of the teams behind both the Jersey City Medical Center and Fort Liberty Barracks Renovation projects for their outstanding work. These recognitions by ENR highlight the importance of proactive disaster preparedness, innovative construction methods, and the commitment to improving the lives of those who rely on these critical facilities.
Conti Federal remains dedicated to pushing the boundaries of design and construction, and these awards serve as a testament to our ongoing efforts to create projects that not only meet but exceed the highest standards of quality and safety. We look forward to continuing our work on projects that make a meaningful impact on the communities we serve.
