The attacks of September 11, 2001 brought to light many security concerns in Washington, DC, including the need for significant upgrades to the chemical, biological, and radiological (CBR) protection systems of several buildings and historic structures. A number of stakeholders, including the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Office of Homeland Security and Architect of the Capitol, sought an experienced contractor to improve current security systems on an aggressive schedule.

Conti Federal replaced old security systems with new state-of-the-art air handling units per client specifications. The project involved work between multiple sites, all of which required an aggressive schedule. Conti Federal worked seven days a week, through the holidays, and, in some cases, only at night to avoid disruption to facility operations and still meet schedule requirements. This resulted in project completion ahead of schedule.

Conti Federal tackled the challenge of coordinating multiple subcontractors at multiple locations simultaneously by maintaining clear communication among all parties. This coordination was also crucial when dealing with the security clearances needed to work in such high profile settings

Conti Federal was assigned eight subtasks at multiple sites totaling $23 million in value to be completed on a fast-tracked schedule. Conti Federal finished all of them on time and budget, garnering positive reviews from stakeholders.

Key features of the project included:

  • Performed demolition and facilities abatement
  • Performed data collection, analysis, and reporting
  • Performed environmental sampling and assessments
  • Recycled building materials
  • Removed utilities
  • Renovated electrical controls, wiring, and cooling tower water
  • Performed site restoration
